INTERPRETING
IN-PERSON
(Spoken languages, American Sign Language (ASL)),
or on-site interpreting, means that the interpreter is with you on site. The interpreter’s task is to interpret and make understandable everything that is being said. In-person interpretation is the most effective way to bridge communication barriers.
VIDEO REMOTE INTERPRETING (VRI)
is a videotelecommunication service that uses devices such as web cameras or videophones to provide sign language or spoken language interpreting services.
This is done through a remote or offsite interpreter, in order to communicate with persons with whom there is a communication barrier.
It is similar to a slightly different technology called video relay service, where the parties are each located in different places. VRI is a type of telecommunications relay service (TRS) that is not regulated by the FCC.
OVER-THE -PHONE INTERPRETING (OPI)
is a 3-way conference call with the interpreter, you, and the party you’re calling or the party who is calling you.
The telephone interpreter converts the spoken language from one language to another.
MODES OF INTERPRETING
SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETING (SI)
is one of the modes of interpreting, when an interpreter translates the message in real-time. The natural flow of the speaker is not disturbed and allows for a fairly smooth output for the listeners.
CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETING (CI)
is a mode of interpreting in which the speaker makes a speech (or says a few sentences) whilst the interpreter takes notes. The interpreter then reproduces what the speaker has said for the audience.
